Essendon Theatre Company presents “The Anniversary”
The central character in “The Anniversary” is dear old mum, a woman whose possessiveness is a killer. She is thoroughly evil and glories in destroying anything that is good and kind and pure; for not being able to enjoy such feelings for herself she is damned if anyone else will. And yet, like the devil, mum has an undeniable charm. This woman would never have been drowned as a witch: she would have been crowned Queen. Since dad thankfully died, mum has carried on his builder’s business and the profits have increased two hundred and fifty per cent. As Tom, her youngest son says: “we must be the only builders putting up condemned property”. Mum keeps a tight hold on all her three sons, binding them to her with gifts, threats and ruthless exploitation of their weaknesses. But as the family is unwillingly brought together to celebrate mum’s wedding anniversary (regardless of deceased dad), revolt is in the air. One son gathers the courage to tell mum he is taking his wife and family to Canada; Tom breaks the news of his impending marriage. Mum fights back with every weapon in her formidable armoury, but her long ascendancy is broken
