Planning a 150th anniversary which coincides with Christmas and the new year is challenging, but Moonee Valley Council is developing a program of events to celebrate the sesquicentenary of local government in Essendon.
The Borough of Essendon and Flemington was proclaimed in December 1861 and a council was elected at the first meeting on January 25, 1862.
There was partying in the streets at the time of the proclamation and again at the centenary in 1962.
Our celebrations will be more sedate, stretching over four months and beginning with a race day at Moonee Valley, an exhibition and cocktail party at the Incinerator Gallery and re-enactments at the Moonee Valley Festival in March.
The Essendon Historical Society will promote history walks and displays at its court house headquarters.
