AUSTRALIA Post is marking its bicentenary this year by looking back at some of its most historical post offices, including Flemington.
The first post office in Flemington was established in 1854 near the Flemington Bridge. It joined a brick kiln, a soap and candle factory, a tannery and two small flour mills in supplying the needs of local pioneers.
The post office was managed by John C. Spencer, who earned about 20pounds a year.
In 1865, a regular mail service began between Melbourne and Keilor, stopping at post offices including Flemington, Moonee Ponds and Essendon. More……
