A CONTROVERSIAL proposal to ban the feeding of ducks at Queens Park has ruffled feathers in Moonee Valley.
Queens Park Cafe operator Geoff Lewis said families had been coming to Moonee Ponds to feed the ducks for generations. He condemned Moonee Valley Council’s move to outlaw the pastime, which is punishable with a $220 on-the-spot fine. “It’s something the last two generations have been doing. It’s one of the major attractions of Queens Park. It’s probably good family therapy.”
Mr Lewis sells duck pellets from his cafe for $1 a bag, which he said barely covered costs. He said if the council was worried about the harm associated with feeding ducks bread, it should start an education campaign. “Rather than have a law that’s so unpopular, they need to educate people,” he said….(read more)
