Australia Day Breakfast 2007
Our 14th I Love Australia Breakfast was held at Windy Hill on Friday 26th January with 209 people attending. President Kevin Plant welcomed everybody including State Member Judy Maddigan, and newly elected Mayor of the City of Moonee Valley, Cr Ben Opie. Guests enjoyed a hearty breakfast listening to a variety of Australian music from Ross Gillard and Sandra Ivin The “Made in Australia Competition” again created great interest. Graeme McTaggart from Essendon Probus was the winner of the hamper donated by Boundy’s Supermarkets which was presented by Roger Priestley. The Stan Morrison Industry Award was presented to Cooks Wrought Iron, a small company who have been in business in Essendon for 150 years. Alan Cook was delighted to accept this award. Our guest speaker Bernard Saundry from Victoria Racing gave a very interesting and entertaining speech about racing in Australia including how it had grown, the numbers making a living in the industry and some of the economic benefits. His talk was interspersed with historical references and he finished by showing a short video highlighting the impact of jockeys Roy Higgins and Scobie Breasley, trainer Bart Cummings and commentator Johnny Tapp. Gerry Noonan, who obtained the services of Bernard, presented him with the usual plaque of recognition and thanked him for his contribution. President Kevin then closed the breakfast by thanking Ron and Moira McFarlane for their excellent organization and running of this event and lastly to all who worked and contributed to make this another great day for the Lions Club of Essendon.
