The number of car accidents in Moonee Valley has dropped by over 30% since 2001, following the implementation of the Moonee Council’s Road Safety Plan. The plan was drafted in 2000 and the council set a target of reducing road accidents by 20%. The reduction of over 30% is a great result.
In 2001 there were 395 vehicular accidents resulting in 7 deaths. By 2005 this figure has been reduced to 271 including one death.
The plan is based on four safety principles – engineering, education, encouragement and enforcement.
