Essendon Rowing Club successfully opened the 2006/07 season with a spectacular event held on Sunday 15 October by City of Moonee Valley’s Mayor Jan Chantry.
The jam packed day commenced with the annual Open Day Club races with ERC members jumping into 4’s and racing over the famous local 350m sprint course. The controversial win was presented to Cameron Gleeson, John Haag, Fabion Lombardi and Jess Cook/David Spiteri and successfully coxed by David Spiteri/Jess Cook by MP, Judy Maddigan.
Following the races, ERC proudly welcomed two new boats into their fleet with the christening of the “Rob & Trudy Wapling” and “Stuart Sheridan”. It has been several years since ERC has been in the fortunate situation of christening two boats at the start of the season. The christenings were witnessed by over 150 loyal and passionate ERC members and their families. It was a very touching moment for the recipients Rob and Trudy Wapling and Stuart Sheridan whose hard work, efforts and success wearing the Red and Black being recognised into the ERC history books. The Day kicked on with the long awaited unveiling of the Team of the Century framed montage.
It was great to see the new members mixing it with the senior members in a successful day with many ales celebrating the great occasion. Special thanks must go to Chris Hammon, Barry Gardner, Nat Sentry, Lucas Mills and Daren Walker for their efforts and contributions to ensuring the success of the 2006/07 ERC OPENING DAY!
Off the back of last seasons success, ERC is eagerly awaiting the start of what is going to be another successful season for the Red and Black commencing in Bendigo on Saturday 21st October 2006.
