After the enormous success Essendon Rowing Club had at the 2006 Victorian State Rowing Championships held earlier this year (February) with seven state titles including the Male B, C and D grade 8s and the Female C and D grade 8s, the success has snowballed at the Australian Masters Regatta recently held at Nagambie lakes. The ERC masters showed the younger generation at the club how it is done with an enormous medal haul of 16 gold, 10 silver and 5 bronze. The standout performances came with every boat ERC rowed in including Tamara McPhersons (Ergfit instructor) efforts taking home 7 gold and one of the clubs wisest members, Marion Camiller who took home 5 medals, 2 of them gold. The biggest success stories came from the ERC representatives in the Victorian squad with Dawn Gilltrap assisting the Vics win in the female 8 and Bill Nugent and Stewart Allsop storming home, wearing the big V in the male quad for the fourth successive time, an achievement unmatched.
From the success ERC has had over the past season both at the Australian Masters, Victorian State championships and the wins to the male and female 8s at the prestigious Head of Yarra regatta held annually in November, the clubs efforts have turned to backing up the season that was with another triumphant season in 2006/2007 commencing in early September at ERCs own 4.5km Saltwater Challenge time trial, where the Tasmanian state crew, with Australian representatives are planning on retaining the Saltwater Challenge Shield.
